Stewards' barbeque
The Stewards' Barbeque
Kit and Ken – a driving force!
The people that make the Royal Cornwall Show tick got together for an informal gathering held in the Exhibition Hall at the showground during September.
Stewards, council members and staff enjoyed a barbecue and buffet supper while the Cornish Wurzels – one of the musical acts at this year’s show – provided the entertainment.
This annual event is hosted by the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association as a means of saying ‘thank you’ to the many men and women who put in a huge amount of voluntary effort during and in the lead-up to the show each year.
Association secretary Christopher Riddle acknowledges the valuable contribution they make:
“The Royal Cornwall Show has a national reputation for excellence, good organisation and a welcoming atmosphere.
“A lot of that is generated by the stewards and staff who do so much to make sure everything works like clockwork for three days in June.”
Two men who have worked at the show for 15 years were presented with certificates and a bottle of champagne in recognition of their efforts, by the president, Anthony Fortescue.
They are Ken Crocker and Kit Marquand, who have provided a chauffer-driven service around the showground for the show president and guests in their vintage Austin motor cars.
In 2009 they officially retired from this annual task although rumour has it that Kit may well be returning again in 2010!
A second presentation was made by the chairman, Jonathan Coode to Christopher Riddle, who has notched up 20 years as show and association secretary.
